Wanderlei Silva has begun an appeal against his lifetime ban at the hands of the NSAC. Silva filed his appeal with the Nevada Supreme Court on Friday over the ban, which was instituted in early 2014 after he evaded a drug test in connection with a planned fight against Chael Sonnen at UFC 175.
Silva’s lawyer argues in the appeal filing, “This case requires the court to vindicate a basic proposition: an agency cannot expand its jurisdiction and take disciplinary action against someone it does not license.”
Silva has been deeply critical of the NSAC and UFC after the ban. The commission argued that Silva was subject to discipline as he was promoting the event despite not being technically licensed at the time of the test. The NSAC has until October 12th to respond.
