A new report reveals that the NSAC has been given the authority to issue lifetime bans in disciplinary proceedings. MMAjunkie reports that bill AB476 was intrdouced by the Nevada assembly in March and passed on June 1st, which allows for lifetime bans in MMA.
The bill reads, “In addition to any other disciplinary action that is taken against a person by the Commission pursuant to this chapter, the Commission may impose a ban from participation in unarmed combat in this State for a certain period, including a lifetime ban from participation in unarmed combat in this state.” It was approved less than a month after a district judge overturned the lifetime ban issued to Wanderlei Silva for evading a drug test in connection with UFC 175.
During Nick Diaz’s hearing on Monday, a lifetime ban was considered but ultimately the commission went with five years instead. That decision has proven to be unpopular with many fighters, who view the punishment as overly stiff compared to Anderson Silva’s one-year suspension for PED use.
